Instructor Training Introduction Process
A perspective from Tony Grigsby
Instructor Training is a great responsibility. To reach this level of
training you have taken your time that would have normally been used for
pleasure activities and put them aside. To be an Instructor of anything
takes a level of proficiency in the subject in which you will teach. To be
able to teach that subject is the true art of being an Instructor.
In becoming an Instructor you would usually attend a
Fundamentals for Instructors class to help you in not only understanding
the foundations of teaching but giving you broad perspective in ways of
delivering your message to your students. You would also receive hands on
teaching assignments as well as critique from an Instructor Trainer or
Instructor Trainer Trainer (ITT).
During this process you will be told of things to do and
not to do. Understand that not everyone has the natural ability to teach
and not all teachers came by it natural in knowing how to do it. Patience
is a necessity if you want to be a good Instructor. Understanding that not
everyone you teach will master the skills or subject you teach but it is
so rewarding to see a student achieve their desired goal and you helping
them to reach it plays the part of what is a good Instructor. It is
recommended that prior to becoming an Instructor, that you have experience
in the skill you teach or the topic you deliver.
Being an Instructor Trainer Trainer (Instructor Cadre)
myself for over 18 years in teaching the experience I had prior, helped
tremendously to adapt the subject matter and the retention of the topic to
teach in a flowing stride.
When you have confidence in the material you deliver it
will make teaching itself much easier for not only you the Instructor but
the student too. You should have an attitude that you learn something
everyday. If you ever become the infamous "know it all" you will find
yourself never keeping up with the latest trends, events, and change in
the material. Simply put you will feel that the original way is and will
always be the best. If you find yourself with the attitude of learning
something everyday then you will be one of the Instructors that might
improve the curriculum for betterment of the material.
There will be times as an Instructor you will be questioned
by a student of why this or that and from the interpretation of the
material may open the door in your mind of just what it means to learn
yourself. Sometimes you may not understand why a student just don't get
it. That’s when you lean on your Instructor Trainer to help you figure out
if there is another way to deliver or teach the topic when faced with this
problem. It should be noted that if the student has no interest what so
ever in the topic you are trying to teach, you may lose the student
entirely.
This is yet another original ability some Instructors have
in making the best of what they teach to spark that interest the student
never knew they had. Should you choose to take the path of becoming an
Instructor or even further by becoming an Instructor Trainer remember
everyone was a student once including you. The one you teach today could
be inspired by you to teach tomorrow.
